Key Areas We Evaluate for RV Buyers
Sleeping Space: 9/10
Sleeping space in the Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK begins with a private front bedroom that boasts a walk-around queen bed with CPAP-friendly shelves that have 110V outlets, and USB-A and -C charging ports for bedside device charging. In addition, each side of the bed has its own nightstand.
Storage in the bedroom is in two hanging closets for shirts or jackets, and two overhead cabinets. However, lift up the bed and you’ll reveal another organized storage space, complete with shelves for footwear, and baskets for smaller items.
At the back of the trailer are two double-size bunk beds. Each has a window that opens as well as outlets for charging devices.
Additional sleeping space is created when the big, U-shaped dinette drops into a double bed and the trundle sofa expands into a queen bed.
Bathroom: 8/10
The bathroom in the Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is spacious for a travel trailer in its size category. The shower is an elbow-friendly 24″ x 40″, so there’s enough room for most people to shower comfortably. The easy-to-clean porcelain toilet is well placed with lots of space around it. The vanity sink is mid-sized and has a nice shelf with a toothbrush holder conveniently placed under the two-door medicine cabinet. Underneath, there’s storage for cleaning supplies and such.
Notably, the bathroom has its own exterior entry door, so if someone needs to use the restroom, they don’t need to go through the trailer to do so.
Overall, this is a fully functional family bathroom. I love that Coachmen installed a couple of towel/robe hooks in this bath. There isn’t a lot of storage here, but it does what families need it to do nicely.
Living Area: 9/10
The Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is one of few travel trailers that boast an entertainment center with a 65-inch TV over a large electric fireplace. It’s thoughtfully placed across from the two-seat sofa, but can be seen from most seats of the dinette. The kids get an excellent view from their bunks.
This is a well-designed living space. A huge picture window lets in loads of natural light, creating an interior space that’s bright, cheery, and very livable. With that said, the Legacy 273DBHCK’s main living space is outdoors, beneath the expansive power awning, where there’s a nicely appointed outdoor kitchen and a propane quick-connect for a gas fireplace.
Kitchen: 8/10
The L-shaped kitchen in the Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK offers everything a camp chef needs to prepare delicious meals. A large, floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet offers plenty of storage for dry goods and a GE 12V refrigerator freezer has lots of space for cold storage. More storage is available in three drawers, a cabinet beneath the sink, and a pair of overhead cabinets.
A small, easy-care solid-surface countertop is punctuated by a generous undermount sink with a high-arch, pulldown faucet. This sink doesn’t have a sink cover to add additional counter space when needed. Instead, it has a roll-up stainless dish dryer, which might be more convenient, especially with a cutting board on top for prepping vegetables.
Aside from the fridge, appliances in this RV include a three-burner gas cooktop, 17-inch oven (perfect for baking cookies or pizza), and a microwave that’s big enough to heat a burrito or two. Across from the kitchen area is a comfortable, U-shaped dinette with storage baskets underneath.
However, outdoors is where it’s at for the majority of camping families. With that in mind, the Legacy 273DBHCK offers an outdoor kitchen that has a pullout grill and small refrigerator that’s perfect for keeping beverages cold and convenient.
Four-Season Capabilities: 7/10
The Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is geared toward three-season camping. But it does this well, by offering a 13,500-BTU air conditioner to create a cool oasis on hot summer days, as well as a fireplace/space heater and a ducted 35,000-BTU gas furnace to take the edge off cool shoulder-season weather. Windows are tinted to resist the sun’s rays, while an enclosed underbelly and tanks helps extend the camping season by protecting the plumbing from freezing temperatures.
This RV is perfect for summer and shoulder season camping, but it’s not designed for year-round camping adventures.
Storage Space: 8/10
An RV that sleeps seven people needs to have storage space for their food, clothing, and other gear. The Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK does this well. Storage space starts outside, with a big passthrough storage bay at both the front and back. Under the awning, there’s a large cabinet that flips down to create convenient counter space or a table for the outdoor kitchen. It would be easy to configure the cabinet with shelves for spices, cooking utensils, and other necessities for outdoor cooking and dining.
Inside, there are convenient hooks for jackets or towels, including a few at kid level. There’s also a corner cabinet with a small counter that has a 110V plugin. This would make a great spot to store coffee-making supplies or what have you.
The Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is designed to make camping easier for families, and I was impressed with how Coachmen has provided simple and functional storage throughout this RV.
Chassis/Suspension: 7/10
The 2027 Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK offers a robust towable setup that’s built around a cambered structural steel I-beam frame paired with a traditional dual-axle leaf spring suspension system. It’s a simple chassis and suspension that’s perfect for getting you and the family to and from your favorite RV park or campground.
Off-Grid/Sustainability: 8/10
The Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK comes equipped with universal roof wiring and charge controller connections for solar panels. The unit I inspected came with a 200W solar panel and a 30-amp solar charge controller. This RV comes with a 12V refrigerator and an electric tankless water heater that makes it possible for seven people to have back-to-back showers when it’s hooked up to city water. However, the 28-gallon freshwater tank will limit water use when you’re off grid.
With all that in mind, the Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is better for camping with full hookups, rather than spending weeks off-grid.
Build Quality: 9/10
The Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK features a solid build that should offer years of trouble-free service, if maintained properly. It’s built on a chassis construction that’s outstandingly solid, especially at its price point. This foundation features cambered steel I-beam construction and full-length welded outriggers on top of a Norco powder-coated chassis.
Although cabinetry is MDF, everything in this RV shows that it was constructed with obvious care and craftsmanship.
Roof construction is vital to the useful lifetime of any RV, since the roof protects the RV from the elements. Roof construction on the Legacy 273DBHCK is clearly built with durability in mind. The walkable roof is protected by a seamless Alpha roof membrane that won’t chalk or degrade over time from the sun’s rays. Coachmen backs the roof membrane with a lifetime warranty.
Build quality for the Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK is excellent when compared to similar RVs at this price point.
Value: 9/10
The 2027 Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK provides excellent value compared to other bunkhouse travel trailers at this price point. It’s a well-designed floorplan with all the necessary elements for easy-breezy family camping adventures. On top of that, it’s built to withstand the rigors of camping with kids and pets. This travel trailer will get a lot of use simply because there’s nothing complicated to using it – just hitch it up and take it to your favorite camping destination.
Closing Notes on the 2027 Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK
If your family is looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer that’s easy to set up and has everything you need for hassle-free, fun camping, the 2027 Coachmen Catalina Legacy 273DBHCK should definitely be on your shortlist. This travel trailer has plenty of sleeping space, loads of storage, and fantastic amenities. Budget-priced travel trailers with this many features that are this well designed and constructed don’t come along every day.
