3 Fall Campgrounds to Add to Your RV Travel List
Fall is a great time to hit the road in your RV. Changing leaves, cooler temperatures, seasonal activities, and warm coastal escapes give RVers plenty of reasons to keep camping well beyond summer. Whether you’re chasing fall color in the mountains, planning a Halloween getaway with the kids, or looking for sunshine as temperatures drop, these three campgrounds deserve a spot on your fall travel list.
September: Smokemont Campground – Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina
Best for: Hikers, leaf seekers, and wildlife watchers
Tucked inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina, Smokemont Campground puts RVers right in the middle of one of the country’s most celebrated outdoor destinations.
As summer gives way to fall, the surrounding mountains begin their colorful transformation. Campers can explore some of the park’s 800-plus miles of maintained trails, fish nearby mountain streams, take a scenic drive, or keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife that calls the Smokies home.
Smokemont accommodates RVs, but campers should come prepared for a more rustic national park experience. There are no standard electric, water, or sewer hookups at campsites, although the campground provides drinking water, flush toilets, and a dump station.
RV Trader Travel Tip: September is a great way to get an early start on fall in the Smokies, but the park becomes especially popular as foliage approaches its peak in October. Reserve ahead if your trip overlaps with peak leaf season. Smokemont is also one of only two Great Smoky Mountains National Park campgrounds open year-round, with reservations available up to six months in advance.
October: Jellystone Park Luray – Luray, Virginia
Best for: Families and Halloween campers
October camping gets a little more festive at Jellystone Park Luray. Located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and just minutes from Luray Caverns, this family-focused campground combines an RV getaway with plenty of activities for younger travelers.
RVers can choose from back-in, pull-thru, and buddy sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. The campground is known for its extensive family amenities and themed events, making it an especially fun option for families looking to turn an October camping trip into a Halloween-season adventure.
Beyond the campground, the Shenandoah Valley offers plenty of opportunities for scenic drives and fall sightseeing.
RV Trader Travel Tip: Plan this trip early. Jellystone Park Luray recommends booking at least six months ahead because the Camp-Resort can fill quickly, and reservations can be made up to 360 days in advance.
November: Gulf State Park Campground – Gulf Shores, Alabama
Best for: Snowbirds, beach lovers, and warm-weather RVers
Not ready for camping season to end? Point the RV south.
Gulf State Park Campground offers a warmer November escape along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. The campground sits on Middle Lake just 1.5 miles from the area’s white-sand beaches, giving travelers easy access to both the water and the park’s outdoor recreation.
The campground features nearly 500 improved full-hookup campsites with paved pads, including options designed to accommodate larger RVs and rigs with slide-outs. Campers can also take advantage of 28 miles of trails, a nature center, swimming pool and splash pad, tennis and pickleball courts, a camp store, laundry facilities, and climate-controlled bathhouses.
November’s milder Gulf Coast weather makes it an appealing stop for RVers heading south for winter; or anyone who wants to trade falling temperatures for a few more days near the beach.
