Sleeping Space: 8/10
The main sleeping area in the rear of the Allegro Bay 38AB has an east-west, walkaround king bed in a slide-out. A big window at the back of this coach lets in plenty of light and makes the bedroom a perfect spot for lounging with a morning coffee. Of course, the bed also has the usual slide-out window on each side. So, there is no shortage of light. (At least when the integrated window shades are open.) Each side of the bed has its own CPAP-friendly night table with a cabinet and plug-ins for USB ports and a 110-volt outlet. A 32-inch smart TV on the opposite wall offers a cozy way to watch your favorite shows in bed.
As usual, Tiffin Motorhomes does a great job creating storage space in the bedroom of the Allegro Bay 38AB. At the foot of the bed, there’s a wardrobe with drawers underneath, and a washer and dryer to help simplify laundry chores. Beneath the bed is a huge, nicely finished storage area, and over the bed are cabinets that are a perfect place for books or whatever you want to store.
In the main living area, the bench dinette table drops down seamlessly into a double sleeping area. (It’s long enough for a shorter adult to get a good night’s sleep on.) Over the cab is a queen bunk that’s like a little living area for kids. It has curtains that can be closed for privacy and importantly, its own 32-inch smart TV.
Bathroom: 9/10
The split bathroom in the Allegro Bay 38AB allows the toilet and sink to be used in privacy while someone is in the shower. In addition, the half bath door can be opened all the way across the hallway to create an en suite for the bedroom. This shower feels almost residential, with lots of headroom and a skylight so tall people can shower without stooping.
On the other side of the hallway, the half bath has a macerator toilet, and plenty of cabinet and drawer storage for everyone’s bathroom necessities. The sink is mounted under a solid-surface countertop on a corner vanity with a surprising amount of storage. A bathroom window lets in natural light. Tiffin Motorhomes added some nice “extras” here, including a towel ring and toilet paper holder.
Living Area: 8/10
The living area in the Allegro Bay 38AB feels spacious, owing to opposing slide-outs that make it approximately 14 feet wide. Light airy colors, tile floors, residential windows, and an optional fireplace in the entertainment console give it a residential ambiance. Twin leather-look, power-reclining theater seats are positioned perfectly for a prime view of the TV.
The TV is on a lift that rises out of a credenza that also contains the cozy fireplace. And tucked behind the fireplace is a massive usable storage space. The theater seats themselves share a deep storage bin and twin cup holders in the central arm. It’s all designed to be a comfortable, cozy space and it accomplishes this very nicely.
Of note, additional outdoor living space (with yet another TV) is created when the Allegro Bay 38AB’s 20-foot Girard power awning is extended.
Kitchen: 9/10
The L-shaped kitchen in the Allegro Bay 38AB has a great triangle that helps make cooking and serving efficient. Meal prep will start with a 20-cubic-foot, two-door, 12-volt refrigerator/freezer — or the big pull-out pantry. Across from the fridge, is a double-bowl kitchen sink with a pull-out faucet, mounted under a solid-surface countertop. There’s plenty of counter space here (for an RV). Cooking appliances include a two-burner induction range and a convection/microwave/air fryer that is large enough to cook Sunday dinners for a small crowd.
Looking for the gas oven found in most RVs? Tiffin Motorhomes omitted it for a reason. They left it out in favor of an (arguably) more practical dishwasher — one that’s ready to take on a family’s worth of dinner dishes.
The four-seat dinette has comfortable, stain-resistant cushions — and seatbelts for two travelers.
Four-Season Capabilities: 9/10
The Allegro Bay 38AB is prepared to take on all but the most extreme weather conditions. It features a robust insulation package, heated tile floors, a 35,000-Btu gas furnace, and two 15,000-Btu air conditioners to keep you comfortable no matter what the weather is doing outside. Underneath, the underbelly is heated, insulated, and enclosed to keep pipes and tanks from freezing. This is a fantastic setup for four-season camping.
Storage Space: 9/10
Wowzers! The Allegro Bay 38AB is built for families — and you can tell. It has abundant storage for everything that families bring on the road with them. This begins outside with multiple storage bays with side swing doors. The main advantage of side swing doors is that they allow access to stored items in tight spaces. However, I also appreciated the struts on these cabinets that keep them from opening too far or closing too quickly. Tiffin Motorhomes put extra effort into the storage bays, with a separate bay for sewer hoses and other little things. (Like a reel that makes deploying and packing the 50-amp power cable a whole lot easier.)
Inside, the Allegro Bay 38AB offers a wealth of storage space throughout. This includes clever additions such as deep storage beneath the dinette benches for bedding, et cetera.
Chassis/Suspension: 9/10
The Allegro Bay 38AB is built on a Freightliner S2RV chassis with a powerful Cummins 86.7 diesel engine that has 800 pounds-foot torque. This pairs with an Allison 3000 9-speed automatic transmission. The Allegro Bay 38AB’s chassis has a single rear axle. This makes it a little easier to maneuver. (And also thousands of dollars less expensive for tire replacement than dual-wheel counterparts.) It also includes a tire pressure monitoring system and a built-in tire inflator which could prove invaluable on road trips.
A rear sway bar and air suspension should reduce the effects of wind turbulence caused when large vehicles pass. This chassis and suspension combination offer enough power and stability to offer confident handling and an excellent driving experience.
Cockpit: 9/10
The cockpit on the Allegro Bay 38AB offers supremely comfortable, power adjustable seats for both driver and passenger. Each gets their own cup holder and the Bluetooth touchscreen can be detached for viewing, adjustments, or navigational assistance from the passenger. This large touchscreen works as a monitor for the backup and side-view cameras too.
The driver gets a great view of the road with all controls close at hand and ergonomic. The autoleveler control touchpad is centrally located on the dash, making it really simple to autolevel the RV. Air brakes offer the maximum stopping power for this heavy RV. (With that said, it will require airbrakes certification to drive.)
Off Grid/Sustainability: 9/10
Tiffin Motorhomes markets the Allegro Bay 38AB as designed to go off-grid — and off the radar. And it’s more than ready to take a family off-grid for weeks at a time. It starts with a rugged chassis, but there’s a lot more here too. This includes oversized tank capacities and 600 watts of solar power with an 8,000-watt Onan generator you can have as a backup plan. It also offers an optional on board in-motion satellite dish you want to stay connected when you’re beyond cell coverage.
Batteries are integral to any power system, and Tiffin Motorhomes equips the Allegro Bay 38AB with a 3,000-watt pure sine wave inverter charger. House batteries can be the standard four six-volt, 210-amp-hour AGM batteries or an optional pair of 12-volt, 270-amp-hour lithium batteries.
Tiffin Motorhomes has gone above and beyond when it comes to equipping the Allegro Bay 38AB with enough off-grid equipment to make it into the ultimate boondocking machine for families.
Value: 8/10
It’s no surprise that the Allegro Bay 38AB isn’t exactly inexpensive. It offers a lot of luxurious amenities, great features, and its build quality is superb. In addition, this RV can be used year-round, on- or off-grid, so it’s bound to get a lot more year-round use than many lower priced RVs. (Plus, you can save a small fortune in RV Park fees by taking it off-grid.) With that said, in a world where many RV manufacturers cut corners wherever possible, the Allegro Bay 38AB is worth its rather hefty price tag.
