There’s a moment that happens to almost every new RV owner at some point. You’ve packed the rig, loaded up everything you think you’ll need, hitched up or climbed in, and pulled out onto the road feeling pretty good about life. Then somewhere around the first highway on-ramp, something feels a little … off. Maybe the back end of the tow vehicle squats lower than expected. Maybe the trailer sways slightly when a semi passes. Or maybe the steering feels looser than it did on the test drive. That feeling is your RV trying to tell you something — about weight distribution.
RV weight distribution is one of those subjects that doesn’t get nearly enough attention in the excitement of buying a rig. It’s not as fun to research as floorplans or solar setups. But understanding how weight works on an RV — where it goes, how much is too much, and how to balance it properly — is one of the most important things a new owner can learn. Get it right and everything handles the way it should. Get it wrong and you’re dealing with anything from poor fuel economy and uneven tire wear to trailer sway that can genuinely ruin your day.

Every RV and tow vehicle has a set of weight ratings that matter. Learning what they mean is the first step.

For tow vehicles, you’ll also want to know your tow rating, hitch weight capacity, and payload rating. All three are separate numbers, and all three can become limiting factors depending on your setup.
If you don’t have all of these numbers written down somewhere accessible, find them before your next trip.
If you’re towing, hitch weight deserves its own conversation. On a travel trailer, that usually means tongue weight — the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch. A common rule of thumb is 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight. Too little tongue weight and the trailer becomes tail-happy, making it more likely to sway side to side. Too much tongue weight can overload the rear of the tow vehicle, causing the front to lift and reducing steering control and braking effectiveness.
On a fifth wheel, that number is usually called pin weight, and it is typically a higher percentage of the loaded trailer weight than a travel trailer’s tongue weight. Always check your trailer and truck ratings before assuming the setup works.
Both situations matter for RV weight distribution. But in my experience, new towers are often more likely to have too little tongue weight on a travel trailer, usually because they’ve loaded heavy items toward the back without thinking about how that shifts the balance point.
A simple tongue weight scale is an inexpensive tool that takes the guesswork out of this for travel trailers. If you’re towing regularly, it’s worth considering.
This is the part that surprises most new owners: It’s not just about total weight; it’s about where that weight lives inside the RV.
For trailers and fifth wheels, the goal is to keep heavier items low and reasonably forward, without overloading the hitch, pin weight, or front storage areas. Think canned goods, tools, water jugs, and anything else on the denser side of your packing list. Lighter items like bedding, clothing, and soft goods can usually go in rear compartments or overhead storage without as much consequence.
If possible, avoid loading heavy items into rear exterior storage bays or the very back of the trailer unless you’re balancing them properly with weight forward. A rear-heavy trailer is a viral video of a swaying trailer waiting to happen.
For motorhomes, the principles are similar. Keep weight as low as possible and distribute it as evenly as you can between the front and rear axles. Check your front and rear GAWR ratings and remember that a motorhome with most of its gear loaded into rear basement storage can end up rear-axle-heavy even if it’s under GVWR overall.
Water weight is one of the most overlooked variables in this equation. A full fresh water tank can add several hundred pounds, and that weight is fixed in one location. Know where your tank sits relative to your axles, and factor it into how you load everything else.
Pro Tip: If possible, my wife and I try to minimize water in the tanks on trips until near our final destination because it frees up a lot of excess weight and helps with everything from sway to fuel economy. We keep enough for bathroom breaks, basic water needs, and emergencies, then fill up as close to our destination as possible.
Estimates and calculations are helpful. An actual scale reading is better. CAT scales are available at many truck stops and weigh stations across the country and are usually inexpensive to use. For a tow vehicle and trailer, you can get individual axle weights by pulling forward in stages. For a motorhome, a single pull gives you front axle, rear axle, and total weight all at once.
Weigh your rig the way you actually travel — not empty, not with half a tank of fuel, but loaded the way it looks when you pull out of the driveway for a real trip. That’s the number that tells you where you actually stand.
Many RV owners are surprised the first time they do this. Some find they’re well within their ratings. Others discover they’ve been casually exceeding an axle rating for months without knowing it.
After switching fifth wheels with our first truck, we didn’t think enough about the weight difference until it was too late. A couple of states’ worth of overheating later, we ended up having to upgrade trucks. It was a very costly mistake. So, trust me, it’s better to know before than after.
If you’re towing a heavier travel trailer — especially around 5,000 pounds loaded or more, depending on your tow vehicle — a weight distribution hitch is worth serious consideration and may be required by your manufacturer.
A weight distribution hitch uses spring bars to distribute the tongue weight more evenly across all axles of the tow vehicle rather than concentrating it at the rear hitch point. The result is a more level tow vehicle, better steering response, and improved braking.
Sway control can also be added to many setups, either as a separate friction bar or built into the head of the hitch itself. If you’ve experienced trailer sway — or want to avoid ever experiencing it — sway control is cheap insurance.
That said, some weight distribution systems can add around 60 to 100 pounds of hardware, so take that into account too. When in doubt, ask a qualified RV service center to help you dial in your weight distribution hitch setup. Getting the tension right matters, and a setup that’s too tight or too loose can cause its own handling issues.
Weight distribution isn’t a one-time check. It’s an ongoing habit. Reweigh when your load changes significantly — after adding aftermarket equipment, switching to a different trailer, or making major changes to what you carry. Be honest about how your rig handles on the road and investigate anything that doesn’t feel right. Sway, squatting, loose steering, and uneven tire wear are all worth paying attention to.
And don’t assume the RV is fine just because nothing has gone wrong yet. Weight problems tend to show up gradually, or all at once in the worst possible moment.
Weight ratings, axle loads, and tongue weight percentages aren’t exactly the exciting part of the RV ownership conversation. Dealers want to talk about things like slide-outs, the upgraded mattress, or the really nice backsplash in the kitchen.
But the owners who understand their numbers — who know what their rig weighs loaded, where that weight sits, and whether their tow vehicle is actually up to the job — are the ones who tend to have fewer problems on the road.
It’s not complicated. It just takes a little time to learn and a little discipline to apply consistently. Get it sorted early, and it becomes second nature. Like most things in RV life, the learning curve is steeper at the beginning than it looks in the rearview mirror.
