Families looking to level up their camping experience without upsizing their vehicle will love the fully featured 2026 Grand Design RV Transcend One 161BH. This small travel trailer packs everything you need for comfortable four-season glamping into a floorplan that’s towable by most large SUVs or mid-size pickups. At just 23 feet long, it’s a cinch to tow or back into a campsite.
But all that’s just the beginning, so let’s take a closer look at this fun, little RV.

I rated the 2026 Grand Design RV Transcend One 161BH a 8.6 out of 10. This model offers great value for a family travel trailer. Especially when you consider two big factors. First, it has a lot of the amenities you’d expect to find in much larger bunkhouse models. Second, you don’t need to change up your vehicle to tow it. It’s also a well-built, single-axle travel trailer — apart from a few (minor) issues. On that topic, the Transcend One 161H comes equipped with imported tires and solid-core cabinetry. I would love to see U.S.-made tires on this rig. Inside, it would be great to see more durable hardwood cabinetry replace the solid core cabinets. However, I can see why Grand Design chose lower cost components to keep the price down. Like most RVs, there’s some give-take here between weight, price, and features.

- Lots of space for 23 feet. Quite simply, there’s room for the whole family in a compact, easy-towing travel trailer. It has a great layout that offers a feeling of spaciousness, and the slide-out adds even more space.
- Easy-to-tow. Towable with a large SUV or mid-size pickup truck, the Transcend One 161BH means you can upgrade your RV without having to upgrade your tow vehicle.
- Ability to enjoy year-round camping. For a lightweight, affordable camper, this model is surprisingly well-suited for four-season camping. That means you can extend the camping season into the cold months.
- Travel-friendly for people and pets. There are number features that are particularly nice as you are traveling. For one, the queen-size Murphy bed can remain deployed when slide out is in. In fact, you actually have full access to everything when the slide-out is in. So, if you need to stop somewhere, you can do a lot. (Including use the bathroom or sleep.) You could even cook. The outside kitchen griddle drawer pulls out far enough from the side of the RV to prevent spatters on the siding.
Challenges
- Limited CCC. The relatively low cargo carrying capacity — 716 pounds — will require weight consciousness. Which is a little ironic, given how much storage space is in this RV.
- Includes some lower grade features. Just to name a few, there’s the plastic toilet (will require extra care for cleaning), the foreign-manufactured tires (with no TPMS), and smallish drawers under the bed. Obviously, some of these decisions are centered about keeping the cost and weight down.
- Murphy beds aren’t for everyone. The bed could be a challenge for some people to deploy and and put away again. But really, it’s particularly inconvenient for full-timers. (In addition to having no privacy in the main sleeping area.) For weekend warriors on short trips it probably wouldn’t be a big deal to flip the bed.

Key Areas We Evaluate for RV Buyers
Sleeping Space: 8/10
It’s hard to believe that there can be sleeping for six in a 23-foot camper, but the Transcend One 161BH manages to pull it off with aplomb and space to spare. The front Murphy bed deploys easily to transform into a full queen bed with a CPAP-ready power pocket and reading light on both sides of the bed.
Nicely, the double bunk beds are big enough for many adults to sleep on. Each bunk has its own USB port to charge tablets or other devices. Does one of your kid’s friends want to come camping too? No worries. There’s additional sleeping space available when the dinette transforms into a kid-size bed.
Bathroom: 8/10
The bathroom at the rear of the Transcend One 161BH is big enough that most campers won’t feel cramped. That said, the 27-inch-by-36-inch acrylic shower is just big enough to shower comfortably. On this note, I was left wondering about how quickly six people showering would cycle through the water. That answer could have an impact on how long you could go boondocking away from a full hookup.
Living Area: 8/10
The living area in the Transcend One 161BH includes a sofa with a console on either side and a 24-inch-by-48-inch folding table that stores neatly in a designated slot underneath it. The table is quick and easy to deploy. I love that it’s completely portable, so you can take it outside to use under the awning. (Or, alternatively, as an additional work surface for the outdoor kitchen.) Additional dining or work space is available on the four-seater bench dinette.
There’s no TV in the Transcend One 161BH, but if I’m being honest, people who buy this RV will be more interested in outdoor activities than watching anyway. Still, if you wanted a TV (maybe for movie nights or watching some unmissable game), it’s prepped for one.
Kitchen: 9/10
The indoor kitchen in the Transcend One 161BH offers a two-burner cooktop, a small microwave, and a big, nine-cubic-foot refrigerator. The kitchen sink is small, but it has a high-neck faucet that makes it easy to fill a large pot or water bottle. There’s not much space on the thermofoil counter, but this could be easily remedied by adding a pop-up counter to the end of the lower cabinet.
Outside is where the action’s at with this RV. The outdoor kitchen under the expansive awning offers a small fridge and a pull-out griddle for creating delicious alfresco meals. The griddle has a small shelf over it that will be handy for a lot of things while you’re cooking.
Four-Season Capabilities: 10/10
The Transcend One 161BH is a capable four-season RV. That said, it includes a 20,000-Btu furnace and an above average insulation package to make it into a cozy retreat when it’s cold outside. Insulation includes R40 insulation in the roof and front cap, as well as R9 insulation in the walls and R11 insulation in the floor. An enclosed, heated underbelly protects plumbing and holding tanks on winter camping trips. Utilities are safe from freezing temperatures in the heated basement passthrough storage compartment.
With that said, a 13,500-Btu rooftop A/C transforms the Transcend One 161BH into an oasis of cool, even during the hottest days of summer. Overall, the Transcend One 161BH’s four-season capabilities are impressive, especially for a smaller travel trailer.
Storage Space: 8/10
Unlike many small bunkhouse RVs, the Transcend One 161BH offers loads of storage space for everyone’s stuff. Outside, a big passthrough storage cabinet at the front of the RV offers storage for camping gear, fishing gear, or whatever you want to bring with you. A lockable storage compartment on the rear wall of the Transcend One 161BH offers a perfect spot for storing tow bars and related towing equipment when the RV is parked.
Inside, mirrored wardrobes on both sides of the bed offer hanging storage for jackets. The shelf over the bed is just the right size for storing books or other personal items. Beneath the table under the sofa, there’s a drawer with removable dog dishes and a drawer that would work perfectly for dog-related supplies like food, grooming tools, or a dog-lifejacket for paddleboarding adventures.
The big refrigerator in the kitchen offers lots of storage for perishable food and beverages. There are small drawers for flatware, cooking utensils and a big drawer under the fridge that’s perfect for storing cookware. More storage is also available in cabinets over the sink and in the drawers beneath the dinette bench seats.
The bathroom offers shelves for storing rolled up towels and other necessities as well as corner storage under the sink for cleaning supplies as well as a small medicine cabinet over the sink for small items.
There’s no shortage of storage space in the Transcend One 161BH. However, the cargo carrying capacity — just 716 pounds — will limit what you can bring with you.
Chassis/Suspension: 8/10
The Transcend One 161BH has a weight-conscious, manual tongue jack and scissor-style stabilizer jacks for set up. The single axle is outfitted with a basic suspension and 15-inch wheels. Grand Design offers a five-year transferable warranty on the chassis of all of its trailers, including this one. But it is a single-axle trailer with foreign-manufactured tires and no TPMS. Fortunately, those are things that can be relatively easily upgraded.
Off-Grid/Sustainability: 9/10
For a small travel trailer, the Transcend One 161BH comes with some pretty big features for camping off-grid. Aside from oversized holding tanks, it’s prepped for an impressive solar power setup. While it comes equipped with a 200-watt solar panel, it has quick connect plugs to add another 600 watts of solar panels, if you need more power. In addition, it’s prepped for a 30-amp controller as well as a 2,000-watt inverter for operating things like the air conditioner or 110-volt outlets. A solar disconnect switch is conveniently located in the basement compartment, making it easily accessible.
Build Quality: 9/10
The build quality of the Transcend One 161BH is impressive, especially for a smaller travel trailer. Little things like tinted windows and motion detector lights in key areas combined with meticulous craftsmanship help make this an RV that’s going to be a pleasure to use for years to come. Dog owners will appreciate pet-friendly features that include a drawer with removable dog bowls, an exterior leash hook, and easy-to-clean, pet-friendly surfaces. I love that everything in the Transcend One 161BH is still accessible when the slide-out is in.
Value: 9/10
Overall, the 2026 Grand Design RV Transcend 161BH offers a lot of bang for the buck. This easy-towing, well-crafted bunkhouse travel trailer offers loads of sleeping space for the whole family. In addition, it offers some very well-executed amenities that include a well-equipped outdoor kitchen beneath a big awning. Not only that, but you can use this RV year-round, either on or off-grid. That means there’s potential to get a lot of use out of this travel trailer. In addition, its small pickup/large SUV friendly-weight means if you’ve already got a tow vehicle you love, you can keep it, saving the cost of a vehicle upgrade. With all that said, the Transcend One 161BH offers excellent value for a very reasonable price.
Closing Notes on the Transcend One 161BH
If you’re looking for a well made family travel trailer that won’t break the bank (or your pickup), the Transcend One 161BH could be the perfect choice. Overall, I was very impressed with this lightweight and versatile travel trailer. It has all the must-haves for carefree camping on or off-grid. With that said, I am personally not a fan of imported tires. Replacing the tires on the Transcend One 161BH with heavier duty tires would help to ensure many miles of trouble free family fun. Overall, this is a super fun little trailer for family camping trips.
