Ducted vs. Nonducted RV A/C Systems: What to Know

When shopping for a new RV, any savvy shopper is going to consider climate control. And that naturally leads to a lot of talk about calculating Btus and choosing between different RV air conditioning systems. RV A/C systems are primarily designed differently for large model and small model RVs. They come in two types: ducted and nonducted RV A/C systems. For each type, cool air is distributed a different way. Additionally, the choice between them impacts installation, noise levels, efficiency, and suitability for different RV sizes and layouts. 

All this to say, before buying a new RV, you’ll want to know your preference — and the reasons behind it. So, let me get you spun up so you can quickly become a smarter RV shopper.

Breaking Down the Ducted vs. Nonducted RV A/C Differences

Ducted RV Air Conditioning

A ducted system uses a central rooftop unit to push cooled air through a network of hidden ducts built into the ceiling or floor of the RV. This air then releases into various rooms through multiple, often adjustable, vents. 

Pros 

  • Even air distribution. The primary advantage is consistent and uniform cooling throughout the entire RV, preventing hot spots and ensuring comfort in separate living, sleeping, and kitchen zones.
  • Quieter operation. Because the fan and compressor are on the roof (and the sound is dispersed through the ductwork), the indoor noise level is significantly lower, providing a more peaceful environment.
  • Aesthetics. The ductwork stays hidden, with only flush-mounted vents visible, offering a cleaner look.
  • Multizone capable. Ducted systems are well-suited for larger RVs with multiple rooms, as they can support independent temperature control in different zones. 

Cons 

  • Complex installation/maintenance. Requires extensive ductwork, making initial installation complex and more expensive. Duct cleaning can also be difficult.
  • Potential for energy loss. Cold air can be lost through poorly insulated or leaky ducts, reducing overall efficiency.
  • Higher cost. Ducted systems generally have a higher initial equipment and installation cost. 

Nonducted RV Air Conditioning

A nonducted system is a self-contained unit, usually mounted on the RV’s roof, that blows cooled air directly into the cabin through a single-louvered assembly air distribution box (ADB) in the ceiling. Larger RVs usually will have up to three of these units on the roof of the RV — one for each zone.

Pros

  • Simple installation. Installation is straightforward and affordable, as it only requires a standard roof opening and no complex ductwork.
  • Energy efficiency (in small spaces). Without ducts, there is no energy loss through ductwork, making them highly efficient at directly cooling the immediate area.
  • Easier maintenance. Filters and components are easily accessible from inside the RV, simplifying routine maintenance.
  • Affordability. Both the units and installation are typically less expensive. 

Cons

  • Noisier. The fan and compressor are located directly within the living space, resulting in higher indoor noise levels.
  • Uneven cooling. Air distribution is limited to the area around the unit, which can lead to hot spots in larger RVs or those with partitioned layouts.
  • Less aesthetically pleasing. The large interior air distribution box is visible on the ceiling, which some owners find less appealing. 

So, Is a Ducted or Nonducted RV A/C Right for My Rig?

The choice depends on the RV owner’s specific needs. 

  • Ducted systems are best for larger RVs (over 30 feet) with multiple rooms, where even temperature control and quiet operation are priorities, justifying the higher cost and installation complexity.
  • Nonducted systems are ideal for smaller or open-plan RVs (under 30 feet) where a simple, cost-effective, and easy-to-install solution is sufficient to cool the entire space.

So, that’s the ins and the outs of RV air conditioning systems. The choice is up to you, but retrofitting an RV with a nonducted system to a ducted system is challenging to say the least. Happy camping!
