Well, rest assured: You’re not the only one in that camp, and there are travel trailers made exactly for you. One of them is the 2026 Grand Design RV Imagine 2970RL, delivering spacious luxury without the hassle of climbing stairs. With a single-level floorplan, this 34-foot travel trailer has all the refined elegance of a fifth wheel. Whether you’re into extended road trips or full-time RV living, the Imagine 2970RL boasts the amenities needed to enjoy luxurious living — on or off-grid.
This isn’t your average travel trailer. It’s more, and it shows. The exterior of this Imagine 2970RL absolutely emanates finesse and craftsmanship. Even so, that’s just a hint of what’s in store inside. I want to tell you all about it, so let’s get rolling with this review!
At a Glance: Imagine 2970RL
I rated the 2026 Grand Design RV Imagine 2970RL a 8.8 out of 10. Grand Design RV has done a phenomenal job with this model. From the moment I stepped inside, I was impressed by the spaciousness of this notably luxurious travel trailer. This spacious feeling is due to the opposing slide-outs for the living/dining area and entertainment/kitchen areas. They’re directly across from one another, so it makes the space feel absolutely huge. It actually adds five feet of width to the main living space of the RV, helping it to feel very residential. Light-colored decor and abundant natural light through double-pane panoramic windows also add to this feeling. Overall, I was very impressed by the design and construction of the Imagine 2970RL.
However, even with all that going for it, the Imagine 2970RL has three minor issues that buyers should be aware of — a small 17-inch (vertical) oven, a relatively small 45-gallon freshwater tank, and the use of OSB strandboard underneath the bed.

Benefits
- Easy towing and handling. The Imagine 2970RL is half-ton towable, which means that if you’re going for an upgrade, you won’t have to upgrade your tow vehicle with it. Further, this model is easy to tow for veterans and newbies alike.
- Fifth-wheel luxury in a travel trailer. This is the same floorplan as the Grand Design RV Reflection 100 29RL — but with no stairs! It has very residential feeling, form the solid-surface countertops to double-slide living space. You’ll certainly have enough room to entertain guests comfortably.
- Ample space and features for full-time living. Full-time RV living means that you have more stuff than the typical weekend warrior. The Imagine 2970RL can accommodate it. It has extensive storage space, the four-season capabilities to camp all year-round, room to load bikes or campfire wood on the rear receiver, and a five-year transferable warranty.
Challenges
- OSB strandboard beneath bed. My biggest complaint is the use of (cringe-worthy) OSB strandboard under the bed in an otherwise beautiful bedroom. I’m sure the use of OSB helps Grand Design RV keep the price of the 2970RL down, but this cost savings comes at the expense of durability and aesthetics. (And that’s before it’s exposed to the humidity that’s present in any travel trailer. )
- The 17-inch (vertical) oven. You won’t be able to roast anything but veggies in the 17 inch oven. I’m surprised that Grand Design didn’t include at least a mid-size oven in this otherwise residential feeling RV. As it is, the 17-inch (vertical) oven is nice to have for pizza, muffins or a sheet of cookies, but it’s woefully inadequate for creating a Sunday roast or holiday meal.
- Small freshwater tank. At just 45 gallons, this is a relatively small freshwater tank. Without a doubt, a larger freshwater tank would offer better off-grid sustainability.

- Value-conscious couples on the hunt for a high-value travel trailer that works for extended travel, camping trips, full-time RV life, or as a destination trailer
Key Areas We Evaluate for RV Buyers
Sleeping Space: 8/10
The bedroom at the front of the Imagine 2970RL offers a full queen north-south bed, with CPAP-ready pocket shelves with USB ports for charging devices and three-way reading lights on either side of the bed. Each side of the bed also has its own night table with two roomy drawers for storage. His-and-hers wardrobe closets on either side of the bed offer hanging storage for jackets and/or shirts.
On the wall at the foot of the bed is another wardrobe with a his-and-hers closet for hanging jackets and/or shirts and big drawers for smaller items. Lift up the bed, and you’ll find a large storage space with a sliding shelf for storing things that you don’t always use, but might need one day.
Not everyone cares if there’s a TV in the bedroom, so Grand Design RV gives you the option of installing a bedroom TV if you want to. The driver’s side wall is prepped for a TV..
Overnight guests are easy to accommodate in this floorplan on a queen flip-out sofa bed in the living room. Overall, I was impressed with the amount of bedroom storage in the Imagine 2970RL. (Even if, as mentioned, I wasn’t a fan of the use of OSB strandboard under the bed.)
Bathroom: 8/10
The bathroom in Imagine 2970RL floorplan is small, but it’s still big enough to be big-people-friendly. The acrylic shower has plenty of headroom for tall people and the toilet — and even more with its skylight. Abundant space around the porcelain toilet means that users won’t feel cramped.
A 60,000-Btu, on-demand water heater helps minimize the Imagine 2970RL’s weight while ensuring that no one has to wait for the hot water tank to heat up.
Bathroom storage includes deep linen shelves, and a big cabinet over the toilet with space for toilet paper, et cetera. I loved that Grand Design RV included a towel bar here. (It’s the little things that count, and I wish more RV manufacturers would do this.) Additional storage space is available in the medicine cabinet over the sink as well as under the sink. The vanity cabinet boasts lots of room for cleaning supplies and decent size drawers for hair brushes (and things like that).
Living Area: 10/10
With loads of natural light and slide-outs located directly across from one another, the living area of the Imagine 2970RL feels open and very residential. There are some nice touches here, such as comfortable reclining theater seats that have flip-down arms with cupholders and USB plugins. They offer a great place for watching the TV, which rises out of the fireplace on the mantle on a motorized lift. There’s also a comfortable sofa that quickly transforms into a sleeping area for overnight guests. Each side of the sofa gets an end table with USB ports and a 110-volt plug in. There’s more than meets the eye here though. Both end tables open up to reveal a surprisingly large, hidden storage space.
The freestanding four-chair dinette features a legless table to make bumping your knees on the pedestal a thing of the past. Surrounded by big windows, it could easily serve as a really nice workspace for someone who worked on the road or just corresponding with family and friends about your travel adventures.
Bring your favorite camping chairs to create even more living space in the great outdoors. The Imagine 2970RL offers 200 square feet of sheltered living space under two large power awnings. Each awning features LED strip lights, creating the perfect ambience for evenings outdoors.
Kitchen: 8/10
The kitchen in the 2970RL floorplan surrounds a kitchen island that has a big farmhouse-style sink, a pull-down spray faucet and a built-in soap dispenser. Form meets function here. This kitchen island boasts a built-in knife drawer and pull-out cutting board over a pull-out trash can, conveniently located right next to the sink. As a matter of fact, the kitchen triangle here keeps everything within easy reach. Another nice touch is that this kitchen offers solid-surface countertops. (Something seldom seen in travel trailers.)
Appliances in this kitchen include a three-burner cooktop, small microwave, and a 17-inch (vertical) oven, and a 10-cubic-foot, 12-volt refrigerator. That said, if you’re into baking bread or making Sunday dinners that include a roast of some sort, you’ll probably find the lack of a residential oven to be a challenge. While an RV oven doesn’t typically get a lot of use, it’s nice to have the option of using one sometimes. I would love to see a convection microwave in this RV. However, a workaround for RVers could be a propane fueled outdoor oven or a countertop oven which could be plugged into one of several outlets in the kitchen.
It was great to see a paper towel holder already installed on the upper cabinets of the coffee bar. There is also abundant storage throughout the kitchen, particularly in the big pantry beside the coffee bar.
Four-Season Capabilities: 10/10
Grand Design RV designed the Imagine series travel trailers to be fully capable four-season travel trailers. With that in mind, the Imagine 2970 floorplan boasts R40 insulation in the roof and front cap. In addition, slide-outs and walls are R23-insulated. R3- insulated floors should help it to stay comfortably warm on chilly mornings.
Aside from its noteworthy insulation package, the Imagine 2970RL offers features to make it cozy and suitable for cold-weather camping. Examples include a heated, enclosed underbelly and 12-volt heating pads to help prevent holding tanks and plumbing from freezing. Inside, the Imagine 2970RL offers a cozy — and very effective — electric fireplace, as well as a 30,000-Btu furnace.
When it’s hot out, the Imagine 2970RL transforms into an aasis of cool, with a ductless direct dump 15,000-Btu air conditioner in the living room. This answers the problem of running ductwork under a hot roof, causing the air inside to heat up, resulting in poor efficiency. However, of a single air conditioner doesn’t provide enough cooling for you, it’s simple to add a second one — it’s prewired to add a second air conditioner in the bedroom.
Overall, the Grand Design RV Imagine 2970RL’s four-season capabilities are pretty impressive. That said, they’re on par with Grand Design RV’s Reflection 150 fifth wheels.
Storage Space: 10/10
The Imagine 2970RL has plenty of storage space for whatever you want to bring with you, including an accessory receiver on the back for carrying a bike rack or a cargo basket of firewood. At the front of the RV, there’s generous heated passthrough storage with lots of space for camping chairs, a grill, golf clubs, and/or whatever else you want to bring with you. This is also where you’ll also find battery and solar panel disconnect switches, a Starlink connection, a 110-volt outlet and a hot/cold outdoor shower. Under frame, sewer hose storage is another appreciated design feature on this RV.
Inside, there’s a wealth of storage in well-constructed cabinets throughout the cabin. The bathroom features cabinet storage, as well as deep shelves that take advantage of the space beside the shower. These would be great for storing towels, but they could also be used to store baskets of bathroom necessities.
Cabinets feature hardwood doors, soft-close hinges, and appear to be carefully crafted. Cavernous storage beneath the bed offers a sliding shelf that would be convenient for keeping smaller items handy, but out of the way too. Aside from the OSB platform base, the underbed storage area appears well-constructed, and there’s a lot of space for keeping items like seasonal bedding (or other things you might not always use but want to have with you).
Chassis/Suspension: 10/10
The Grand Design RV Imagine 2970RL features sturdy but lightweight aluminum frame construction that sits on a Lippert chassis. It offers a power tongue jack and manual scissor-style corner stabilizers for leveling. The whole RV sits on dual axles equipped with a MORryde CRE3000 suspension to maximize durability while providing a superior towing and handling experience. Its 15-inch wheels have integrated antilock brakes with sway control and are kitted out with TPMS-prepped, U.S.-made Goodyear Endurance tires.
Overall, the chassis and suspension setup on the Imagine 2970RL is comparable to most other mid- to large-size travel trailers. However, what truly makes it stand out is that Grand Design RV backs the frame with a transferable five-year warranty.
Off-Grid/Sustainability: 7/10
The Imagine 2970RL was designed for use with full hookups, but with a few upgrades, it could also be used off-grid for more extended periods. Its 200-watt solar panel and 30-amp controller are enough to run the 12-volt refrigerator. The Imagine 2970RL also has quick connections to add more solar panels to the roof, but an inverter would be necessary to run things like the AC outlets, the TV, or the fireplace. (A more economical way to do this would be by simply bringing a generator on your off-grid adventures.)
The Imagine 2970RL offers a relatively small 45-gallon freshwater tank, and this could last for up to eight days off grid for one person — or up to four days for a couple. With a gray tank size of 90 gallons and a 45-gallon black tank, there’s more than enough gray and black water holding capacity to get off-grid for a week
Build Quality: 8/10
Overall, the Imagine 2970RL is well-crafted with some nice finishing touches, like solid-surface countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, and a 40-inch TV in the living room. You can tell that the people who built it cared about what they were building. With that said, the egregious use of OSB under the bed really detracts from the otherwise excellent build quality of the Imagine 2970RL. Similarly, the 17-inch (vertical) oven is another outlier in otherwise very nice build quality.
Value: 9/10
Impressive quality and luxurious amenities combined with four-season capability make the Imagine2970RL an excellent value for its class. One thing I haven’t touched on is that this travel trailer is built with laminated Azdel sidewall construction and topped with a walkable roof with a durable, low maintenance PVC roof membrane. It’s clearly designed with an eye to providing many years of enjoyment. Overall, the Imagine 2970RL provides very good value especially when compared to other travel trailers at roughly the same point.
Closing Notes on the Imagine 2970RL
I was really impressed with this travel trailer. There’s a lot to love here for couples or solos looking for a travel trailer for weekend getaways, road trips, or extended use. The layout is noticeably similar to the pricier Grand Design RV 150 Series 295RL — a fifth wheel. Key differences here are the lack of stairs, a smaller oven, as well as a few lower quality components (like the OSB under the bed). I personally love that Grand Design RV didn’t put valances in this trailer, opting instead for blackout shades on every window. The result is a clean, minimalist aesthetic that adds to the fresh, spacious feel of this travel trailer. This travel trailer would be an excellent choice for couples or solos looking for a luxurious towable RV that offers everything on one level.
