Even though parts of Texas suffered damage when the state was hit by Hurricane Dolly, reports are that most of the damage seen at RV parks was limited to debris and a loss of trees and vegetation. It's wise, though, that before heading to Texas you contact the RV Park where you plan to stay just to ensure that all their facilities are operating at 100% capacity.
Down in Deep South Texas lays the Rio Grande Valley which boasts a wonderful tropical climate and is a great stopping point during the winter months. One of the most popular pastimes to participate in is birding or bird watching. There are literally thousands of species of birds that call this area home. Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas and the self-proclaimed 'shrimp capital of the world.' While in Brownsville, you can visit the Mexican city of Matamoras, which is just a short walk over the international bridge. Don't forget to bring your passports! Here are some of the major attractions to see in the Rio Grande Valley:
' The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine. This stop draws thousands of pilgrims each year from all across South and Central America.
' Brownsville is home to numerous battlefields. The final battle of the Civil War, fought several weeks after the surrender of the Confederacy, was fought at Palmito Ranch which is near Brownsville. The Battle of Palo Alto, another National Historic Site, was the site of a battle during the Mexican-American War.
' The Confederate Air Force-Rio Grande Valley Wing is a facility that's home to 15 vintage airplanes in flying condition. Each March they feature a spectacular air show.
' The Gladys Porter Zoo is home to more than 1,500 species of animal and is home to many endangered species. You'll enjoy visiting the zoo's favorites: gorillas, giraffes, lions and rhinos along with their collection of exotic animals.
' Other places to visit in the Rio Grande include the Port Isabel Historical Museums, The Old Clock Museum, Port Isabel Lighthouse and the Rio Grande Valley Museum Complex.
Another beautiful and majestic Texas location to visit during winter is the area known as the Texas Hill Country. This wild area of Central Texas ranges in elevation from about 1,000 feet up to approximately 2,600 feet. This area is known for many thousands of miles of rugged but bountiful landscape that is full of rivers and streams and home to much natural wildlife. The average wintertime low temperature is just above freezing with daytime temperatures reaching the mild 60s. You'll want to visit cities in this region like Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Blanco, Bandera, Marble Falls, New Braunfels, San Marcos and Utopia. These places are home to beautiful state parks, natural areas, wildlife retreats and a great place to fish and canoe in the many lakes and rivers. And since you're not too far from Austin, the capital city, why not take time to visit the Capitol building and see the campus of the University of Texas.
San Antonio, called the Shrine of Texas, is a top ranking city for vacationers and RVers alike. You'll enjoy the Alamo, Mission San Jose, and the Spanish Governor's Palace as well as the winding Riverwalk which runs through San Antonio's historic downtown area.
Golfers will want to take advantage of the many exciting championship golf courses that are found throughout San Antonio. And make sure you have your camera ready when you visit Market Square, Fiesta Texas and La Villita. And for those with a palate for delicious foods, you'll love the culinary delights available in Romantic San Antonio.
Another winter Texas destination is West Texas and Big Bend. You'll love the wide open spaces and the last real frontier of the Lone Star State.
The Great Big Bend Region is home to Big Bend National Park'a perfect nesting spot for your RV. The Davis Mountains, home to Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory, are two must sees in this region.
You'll want to visit El Paso, which is in the farthest point west in Texas and is on your way when you're headed to the Big Bend region. From El Paso, Mexico is just a short drive away.
Palo Duro Canyon, just south of Amarillo, provides a perfect place for those who enjoy a rugged backpacking experience. Other communities in this region of Texas to visit include: Odessa-Midland, San Angelo, Pecos, Lubbock and Abilene.
The Lone Star State is a perfect destination for winter RV travelers because of its many historical attractions, vast wealth of beautiful landscapes and its mild winter temperatures. So what are you waiting for? Pack up the RV and head to Texas. Yeehaw!!!!
